Introduction

A reasonable and practical understanding of labour laws is essential for effectively managing the manpower deployed in any industry. This knowledge is not only important for HR professionals — line managers, supervisors, and functional heads also need to be aware of the basic labour legislations that directly influence their day-to-day operations, decision-making, and employee relations. With the Central Government announcing the effective date for implementation of the four new Labour Codes passed by Parliament during 2019–2020 (notification dated 21st November 2025), it has become even more important for Managers to understand the emerging legal framework and its impact on employment practices, wages, working conditions, and compliances.
